Lombard Illinois 2007
This is just another side note in the history of a small village. Lombard is just like any other place in America. Things change and buildings go on to live a different purpose. Sometimes buildings are removed and others they are saved. This one was saved. Recently in this country it seems that many of them are not deemed worthy of saving.
It was really foggy today. I always enjoy fog no matter where it is. The last time I saw fog was about a month ago on a train ride through the farmland of Nebraska as the sun was rising. The fog was so thick you couldnt even see out of the train. The stuff we had this morning wasn’t quite as thick but it did set a certain mood for the rest of the day…
tic tic tic… the road trip awaits…
Everything that I imagined the desert would be like was wrong.
I have heard it said that “nothing lasts forever” Seeing some of what I have seen and experienced I tend to agree.. Some things change, others stay the same. Nebraska offers some insight.. or not. I am convinced of the (relative) permanence of some things but.. everything tends to erode quite quickly!
Maybe there will be counting of pennies… but rain or shine the island awaits. There should be many old VW vehicles on the island for some yearly event.

It has been 3 weeks since the burn and I am still thinking about how powerful the whole event was. I cannot wait to get back on the playa
One of the things I keep coming back to is something I saw when I was as close to The Man burn as possible. It was extremely hot, the largest fire I had seen and a beautiful young man was bowing and praying to the fire. He was standing much closer than I could bear. Even nude he was able to withstand the extreme heat. There was some unknown beauty about that moment.. The urge to go to the flame no matter how hot.
Even after one full week in the desert everyone still flocks to the “flame”.

Today I encountered a man who told me I had no right to make pictures. The man quickly became informed I did have the right. He demanded I ruin my film or delete my digital images... The man ended up walking away informed and I ended up with my photographs of the man.
Never be afraid to make a photograph

Chicago, The Loop. The elevated subway tracks are casting a shadow on the sidewalk as cars pass under the tracks..

Shown here is a image from my home made 4"x10" pinhole camera, the print is made by contact printing.

I've been working on learning how to use a wide variety of photographic processes. The norm nowadays is fresh out of the box factory made gelatin silver coated paper exposed under an enlarger using small negatives. The hand crafted processes that I am interested in as of late are generally referred to as Alternate Processes. All of the chemicals are coated onto paper by hand to create a light sensitive emulsion, not by a machine in a factory thus being an alternative process (apparently). A 4x5 inch negative is placed directly in contact with the emulsion of the paper with a sheet of glass on top, creating a sandwich of sorts. Even without much machinery involved this process of contact printing creates very beautiful prints.

It was about 30F outside and this man in a banana suit was serving free samples of frozen drinks.

The Art Institute of Chicago. I photographed this without a functioning light meter. My guess was quite off and the very dense negative produced this very interesting looking print.

This is where my darkroom currently resides. This is a family laundry room.

This is a contact print from a sheet of Ilford HP5 developed in ilfosol-s and printed on ilford mgIV rc glossy paper. The image made with the previously mentioned pinhole camera using a 12~ minute long exposure.
